The sugar industry has long been protected and now Trump has given it another shot in the arm by pressing Coca Cola.

The US president, known to be a big lover of the fizzy beverage, said last week that Coca-Cola made with cane sugar is "just better".

The debate over whether Coca-Cola should use high-fructose corn syrup or cane sugar in its signature cola obscures an important fact: Consumers are increasingly looking for Coke with no sugar at all
