The European Union says it is working "non-stop" to help countries battling the wildfires that are raging in parts of the continent. The EU's civil protection mechanism -- which provides coordinated assistance between the bloc's members -- has been "activated 16 times during the current season,

Spain fights several ongoing fires in the country, Galicia being one the most affected regions. In some villages, residents battle blazes however they can even before firefighters arrive. The fires have already killed three people in the country.

Firefighters in Spain, Portugal and Greece battled ongoing wildfires on Friday, an important religious holiday in all three countries, as persistent hot, dry conditions challenged efforts to contain the blazes.
