A Delta flight from Madrid to JFK made an emergency landing on a remote Atlantic island, leaving nearly 300 passengers and crew stranded overnight.

A Delta jet experienced engine problems on what was supposed to be a trans-Atlantic flight and landed on an island in the middle of the ocean, leading to a more than 31-hour delay, officials said Thursday.

Passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight from Madrid to New York made an emergency landing in the Portuguese Island of Terceira in the Azores. The airline said the John F. Kennedy International Airport-bound flight experienced an engine problem after midnight and made an emergency landing.
