At least ten people died in Kenya Monday as security forces clashed with protesters on the outskirts of Nairobi during anti-government demonstrations marking Saba Saba Day, a commemoration of the 1990 pro-democracy uprising.

Simmering anger against President William Ruto’s government has boiled over into clashes between protesters and the police, who have deployed live rounds, tear gas and water cannons.

Six people are reported to have been killed after police in Nairobi opened fire on protesters. At least four people were fatally shot in the Ngong area and another two killed in the Kangemi area. More gunfire has been heard in the Githurai and Kiambu areas of the capital, as tensions remain high.
