Episode 31 of the ongoing Kilauea eruption ended abruptly at 2:52 a.m. today after more than 12 hours of intense lava fountaining inside Halemaumau crater, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

Episode 31 of the ongoing Kilauea eruption began today at 2:04 p.m., and lava could be seen fountaining from the north vent. Initial fountaining was approximately 100 feet high, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano resumed erupting Friday by shooting an arc of lava 100 feet into the air and across a section of its summit crater floor.
