Announced February 13, Visual Studio 17.9 can be downloaded from the Visual Studio website. The update features AI-generated Git commit messages using GitHub Copilot.

GitHub Copilot is an OpenAI-powered Visual Studio Code extension that can suggest lines of code or entire functions as you type.

The company announced that GPT-5 is now integrated into the IDE, and support for MCP is generally available as well.

Copilot also generates commit messages based on the recent changes made to the code. Furthermore, GitHub Copilot Free is also available for Visual Studio users.
