According to one measure, Python is potentially on the verge of becoming the most popular computer programming language and joining C and Java as the only other languages to attain the top spot.

It's the top or one of the top two languages in most notable language popularity indexes, and even looks set to beat Java these days. But 35-year-old Python does have its weaknesses.

A study conducted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) put Python at the top of the list of favorite languages among such contenders as Java, JavaScript, C++, and Go.
