NEEDHAM, Mass. — The tables were set for the annual Tuesday dinner leading up to the Needham-Wellesley Thanksgiving Day football game, and the Rotary Club organizers had a surprise in store.

The next two games were the most competitive of the season. On Oct. 4, Needham defeated Weymouth, 27-14, and came away with a hard-fought 12-7 win four days later against Natick to improve to 5-0.

Needham coach Doug Kopsco voiced similar sentiments. “It was a chippy game and we don’t really like to coach that brand of football, and I know Jesse doesn’t, either,” Kopsco said.

The last time the Wellesley-Needham football game was canceled was 1917-1920, first for the War, and then for the last great pandemic.
