Jake Burton Carpenter passed away at age 65 on Wednesday night due to complications from cancer. Carpenter pioneered the sport of snowboarding and founded Burton Snowboards.

Jake Burton Carpenter, the founder of Burlington-based Burton Snowboards, died Wednesday evening of complications from cancer, the company announced Thursday. He was 65.

He was 65. Carpenter was just 23 when–after countless trips to hardware stores resulting in around 100 prototypes–he produced in his Vermont barn the Burton Backhill, one of the first snowboards.
