For starters, the Pixel 4a is made with cheaper plastic than last year's flagship, which makes it feel less expensive. That said, at 143g, it's almost 20 grams lighter than the Pixel 4.

The Pixel 4A 5G adds an ultrawide camera to the mix (just like the Pixel 5), and they all share a nearly-identical 8-megapixel selfie camera too. I can't stop taking photos with these phones.

If the Pixel 4a is supposed to be the essence of smartphone simplicity, I think Google nailed it. Now of course the pursuit of simplicity comes with an obvious trade-off: a lack of options.

The 3a was a fantastic buy, and the 4a looks even better. I won't upgrade, because that would be silly, but I'm glad to see they're still serving the midrange market so well.
