A Chicago flash flood warning went out Tuesday night as the city experienced some of its heaviest rain since 2023. More than 4 inches fell in less than 90 minutes on the West Side.

Heavy rainfall fell on Chicago’s West Side during a short amount of time Tuesday night, leaving some drivers flooded out in underpasses and several homeowners in ankle-deep water in their basements. A Flash Flood Warning was in effect for several hours before the water receded by early Wednesday morning.

Broken tree limbs, twisted metal, crumpled cars and muddy debris remained as crews worked to clear roads and culverts in the wake of Tuesday's flash flood that killed three people — including two children — and significantly damaged as many as 50 homes,

Mayor Lynn Crawford said hearts are broken over the lives lost and stomachs are in knots as residents begin to take stock of the damage.
