The FAA has dramatically cut the number of flights coming in and out of troubled Newark Liberty International Airport for at least the next several months, federal officials said Tuesday.

Bergstrom International Airport due to ongoing shortages in air traffic control, according to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory.  Wednesday's delay is in effect from noon until 9 p.m. Departures are delayed by an average of 49 minutes.

With summer travel season approaching, the crisis at the New Jersey airport could mean weeks, if not months, of misery for travelers.

The temporary restrictions are being imposed after repeated flight delays and cancellations. The cap will increase to 68 flights per hour in mid-June.

Most important, the current governance arrangement jeopardizes safety, because the FAA both operates and regulates the air-traffic-control system. This is a clear conflict of interest, and one that the International Civil Aviation Organization has directed member countries to eliminate.
